Let’s Keep Practicing: Clicks and Resets 002

December 22, 2024 clicker training session

I was lucky to get some 1:1 time with Windy, so I brought out two of our food bowls and used clicker training to reinforce her choosing which bowl she’d like her treat in.

At the beginning, Windy showed a good balance between choosing the left and right bowls. Eventually, she placed her paw or lowered her head frequently over the left bowl, which got me curious. Why always the bowl on the left? It was pink—a color she likely couldn’t see—and had the same size, depth, and smell as the yellow-green bowl.

Somewhere in the middle, she chose to do a curtsy in between the two bowls. Whenever she does something else, I reset her by tossing the treat under me, so she’d have to go under to get it. She repeated this about 3-5 times before choosing the left bowl again.

It would’ve been fascinating to hear Windy verbally share why she made her choices, but we’ll have to settle for the ambiguity of it all. I’m glad she didn’t show any frustration, and we found time to bond over our two favorite things in the world: training and food.
